More than 500 000 learners spend about two hours or more per day walking to school.
The Bike to School programme provides bicycles to learners to use as a mode of transport to and from school. A key concept here is that the learners contribute towards the cost of the bikes:
Make a difference in many children’s lives…....
We believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty.
When MTC for Health (www.mtcforhealth.co.za) highlighted a program they were working on we at Big Tree Foundation were really exited to get involved and put our hearts and minds to finding the solution.
How would you manage if you had to walk for more than 3 kilometers to school with shoes that are too small and no socks, or no shoes at all?
This is reality for most children in the rural communities in and around Cape Town. The provision of uniforms to these learners is about more than comfort: it is also about eradicating the embarrassment of not having any underwear. Children should not be subjected to this. We really have very little choice. We have to step in and help.
How do you concentrate if you are not in a comfortable position?
When the Big Tree Foundation visited schools to monitor the bike to school programme, the teachers and headmasters of the schools were more than ready to make us aware of the shortage of school desks. We could not imagine having to spend the school day on the floor.
Make a difference - Plant a seed and grow a life!
How easy to make the difference to a child’s life
We at the Big Tree Foundation have identified the lack of basic numeracy and literacy skills of many of the children in the rural communities of the Western Cape. Most people have the basic understanding of numbers and letters and it is virtually impossible to survive in the world without this basic understanding.
You learn most of your social skills through play. Being part of a team. Learning to lose with dignity. Fair play.
Sport is not about winning; it is about creating a stronger, healthier, safer and happier society.
“Sport has the power to unite people in a way little else can it can create hope, breaks down racial barriers… and laugh in the face of discrimination. Sport speaks to people in a language they can all understand.” – Nelson Mandela
