BACKPACKS SAVING LIVES !

Thanks to the District Deputy Director of Public Transport for Cape Winelands District Municipality, Mr. Bevan Kurtz, the learners in the broader area of the Winelands District are now more visible to the passing motorist.

The Big Tree Foundation in co-operation with the CWDM was proud to deliver reflective bands and backpacks to the learners at Wemmerhoek Primary School. This is the start of a road safety campaign to help save lives in the rural areas surrounding Cape Winelands District. The Big Tree Foundation made contact with Mr. Kurtz and entered a joint venture partnership to ensure the safety of the learners.

While the provision of uniforms, bicycles and school equipment is the key focus area of the Big Tree Foundation this initiative fits perfectly with the feel and vision of the Foundation. "Our access to education program is not limited to the provision of a bicycle, but also educating the learners about road safety" said Mr. Victor Sables, Director of the Big Tree Foundation. He added "we see the safety clothing as part of the program and we proud to be part of this initiative" On the 5th June this year the first 418 of the 5000 reflective school backpacks was handed to the Wemmershoek Primary School learners.

The learners and teachers were pleasantly surprised to find the backpacks were filled with a sandwich and some Big Tree Foundation stationery. The local councilor Mrs Maria Smith expressed her appreciation on behalf of the community to Big Tree Foundation and the Cape Winelands District Municipality for helping to improve the safety of the learners.
